Roof and sunroof diagnostics, reset,
programming and calibration, Sydney

Most power roofs built since the mid-2000s are run by a control unit that listens to a dozen sensors and refuses to move the moment one of them disagrees. A roof that stops at the same point every time, a sunroof that died after a flat battery, a new motor that will not initialise, a dealer verdict of no fault found: these are electronic questions, and the honest answer comes off the scan tool, not off a parts shelf. We read the module live through a cycle, show you what it says, and put the finding and the price in writing before anyone orders a part. Convertibles, sunroofs and panoramic roofs, most makes.

What the scan tool is for

Three faults that are found
on a screen, not on a shelf

The pattern across the roofs that reach us: the mechanism is usually fine, and the roof has stopped because the electronics have lost trust in it. Here are the three ways that happens, and why a reset alone is rarely the whole repair.

Pattern 01

Dead after a flat battery, a new battery or a jump start

any power roof · re-learn · 12V supply

How it shows up

The car sat for a few weeks, or had a battery replaced, and now the roof or sunroof will not move. Or it moves once, stops short, and ignores the switch. Everything else on the car works. Sometimes a message appears; often nothing does.

Why it gets misread

It looks like a broken motor and gets quoted as one. In fact the control unit has lost its reference positions and will not run a full cycle until it is taught them again. Holding the switch for the owner's-manual reset works on some cars and not on others, and it never fixes the low voltage or the loose terminal that caused the problem in the first place.

What we do

We load-test the 12V supply and its connections, read the fault memory, and run the manufacturer re-learn with the scan tool while watching the sensors live. If a sensor drops out mid-cycle we see it there. You get the written finding either way, and a price only if a part is actually needed.

Pattern 02

After a parts change: the new motor, module or glass that will not initialise

sunroof motors · roof modules · sunshades · regulators

How it shows up

Someone fitted a new sunroof motor, a roof control module, a panoramic glass panel, a window regulator or a roller blind, and the roof still does not work, or works badly: stops short, runs the wrong way, trips the anti-pinch, or leaves a window a few millimetres low so the roof will not latch.

Why it gets misread

Modern roof parts do not simply bolt in. A motor has to be taught its end stops, a module has to be coded to the car, a window has to be re-indexed to the seal, a sunshade has to learn its travel. Skip the step and a perfectly good part is condemned, or the roof is driven into its own stops until something breaks.

What we do

We program and calibrate the part you have, provided it is the right part: motor and module coding, end-stop and anti-pinch learn, window index, sunshade travel, then a full cycle and a water test. Other workshops and dealers send cars to us for exactly this step; see the trade page.

Pattern 03

Stops at the same point every time, and nobody can find why

microswitches · position sensors · latches · wiring

How it shows up

The roof travels to the same place in every cycle and stops, or reverses. A reset clears it for a day. One workshop says pump, the dealer says no fault found, and the roof still stops. On a folding hardtop this often arrives with a warning the moment the boot separator or a window is slightly out.

Why it gets misread

Resetting a fault code is not finding the fault. A position sensor that drifts, a microswitch that makes contact nine times out of ten, a latch that closes but does not report closed, a chafed wire in a hinge loom: none of these show up as a stored code, and all of them show up on live data if you know what the number should read at that point in the cycle.

What we do

We run the roof on the scan tool with each sensor on screen, mark where the value goes wrong, then prove it mechanically at that point in the travel. Twenty years of these roofs means we know what the numbers should say. The finding goes in writing with a price for the real repair. Where that repair is hydraulic, the ram rebuild page explains the next step.

Where scanning earns its keep

The roofs we read
most weeks

Every make has its own module, its own re-learn and its own way of refusing. These are the ones on the scan tool most often.

Mercedes-Benz
SLK and SL vario roofs that stop on a microswitch or a boot-separator sensor, CLK and E-Class roofs waiting on a window, and the panoramic sunroofs on the A, CLA and C-Class whose roller sunshades and motors must be coded after replacement.
BMW
3 Series and 4 Series hardtops and the Z4, where a window that is not initialised stops the roof before it starts, and X-series panoramic sunroofs that need their end stops learned after a motor or cable.
Audi, VW & Porsche
A3, A5 and TT roofs that stop with a warning, Eos and Boxster roofs with position-sensor faults, Tiguan panoramic roofs after a blind or motor change.
Range Rover, Peugeot & the rest
Panoramic sunroofs that trip their anti-pinch after new glass or a new motor, blinds that stop short, and the normalisation every one of them needs after a battery.

Something else with a roof module? We work on most makes: text us the make and model or call 0418 200 289.

How a visit works

Four steps. No surprises.

  1. 1

Tell us the car, the symptom and what has already been tried

Call 0418 200 289. "2015 SLK, stops halfway every time, battery changed last month" is enough. If someone has already fitted a part or run a reset, say so; it changes where we look first. A short video of the roof trying to move helps.

  2. 2

The read, with you able to see it

Fault memory, then the roof run live on the scan tool with the sensors on screen, the 12V supply load-tested, and the point in the travel where the number goes wrong proved mechanically. The first look is a fixed assessment fee, told to you when you book, and it comes off the repair if you go ahead with us. An intermittent fault that needs a longer test is quoted as a second step before we start it, never discovered on the invoice.

  3. 3

A written finding and a price before any part is ordered

You get the fault, the cause and the repair price in writing. Where the fix is a re-learn or a calibration, that is what you pay for. Where a part has failed, the quote names that part and nothing else, with your go-ahead first.

  4. 4

    Cycle-tested, then rained on

No roof leaves on a promise. The roof is cycled repeatedly with the module live, the windows and latches checked against the seals, and the car water-tested before handover.

Can you just reset my sunroof or roof?

We can, and on a car that has only had a flat battery that may be the whole job. But a reset that holds for a day and fails again is telling you a sensor, switch or motor is on its way out. We run the re-learn with the module live so we can see whether the roof is actually healthy, and we tell you plainly if it is not.

I did the owner's-manual reset procedure myself and it did not work. Now what?

That is common and it is not your fault. The hold-the-switch procedure only works when every sensor already agrees with the control unit; if one does not, the roof needs the scan-tool re-learn, and often the cause behind it. Do not force any part of the roof by hand in the meantime; a bent bow or a snapped flap turns an electrical fault into a mechanical one. If the roof is stuck open, read this first.

Do you charge for the diagnosis?

Yes. The first look is a fixed assessment fee, told to you when you book, and it comes off the repair if you go ahead with us. An intermittent fault that needs a longer test is quoted as a second step before we start it, never discovered on the invoice. Dealers, workshops and insurers are billed at trade rates. We would rather charge for an honest hour on the scan tool than guess at a part and charge you for that.

My car is under warranty. Should it go to the dealer?

For a fault inside the manufacturer warranty, yes, and we will say so when you call. We are the right call when the car is out of warranty, when the dealer has returned it with no fault found, when the roof fault is part of an insurance claim, or when you want the finding in writing before you approve a large repair.

I run a workshop or a dealership. Can I send a car just for the programming step?

Yes. Window regulators, sunroof motors, roller sunshades, glass panels and roof modules all come to us for initialising and coding after another workshop has done the mechanical fit. One visit, a written result, trade pricing. Details on the workshops page.

Can you fit or flash a second-hand module or motor I bought online?

Not blind. Many later roof and sunroof modules are matched to the car they came from, and a used one may never accept the new car. We will test what you have bought and tell you straight whether it can be made to work, but we do not fit untested used electronics, do not diagnose over the phone from a fault code someone read out, and do not do remote resets. Every scan-tool step we take goes on your written report.

What owners say

From the 4.9★ Google reviews

★★★★★

"Michael is the best. My Benz had a seized panoramic sunroof and the motor for the roof died. He had it fixed and working perfectly in three hours. And was by far the most reasonably priced."

Mercedes-Benz · Seized panoramic sunroof & motor
★★★★★

"It was an absolute pleasure dealing with Michael. With 29 years of experience, he really knows his craft. He was honest, friendly, and did a perfect job fixing the convertible top on my Mercedes. Definitely worth the 1-hour drive to get there. Highly recommended!"

Mercedes-Benz · Convertible top
★★★★★

"Michael is an amazing craftsman. For what would have taken us to get an entire large part from BMW and coordinate roof repair with expensive repair service, Michael created a small part for our car and fixed it then and there. He charges reasonably. I highly recommend his service and will happily be a repeat customer."
