Roof specialists,
not a general workshop

Convertible & Sunroof Autocentre has repaired convertible roofs, sunroofs and panoramic glass roofs from the same Princes Highway workshop for more than twenty years. It is all we do.

Most workshops see a handful of roof faults a year and quote a new mechanism because it is the safe answer. We see them every day, so we can tell a seized guide from a dead motor, a leaking ram from a tired pump, and a blocked drain from a perished seal. That is the difference between a repair and a replacement, and it is why owners drive across Sydney, and post cylinders from interstate, to get here.

Who's behind it

Michael, and a small team that answers the phone

The workshop is run by Michael (some customers know him as Ming), the technician you will find under the roof of your car. He has spent more than two decades inside convertible mechanisms, hydraulic systems and sunroof cassettes across European, Japanese and Australian makes, and he still does the diagnosis on every job himself.

Around him is a small team that looks after bookings, quotes, trade accounts and insurer paperwork, so the person fixing your roof is not also the person trying to answer three phones. When you submit an enquiry, a person reads it and calls you back during opening hours.

We are independent. We are not tied to a dealer network, a parts brand or an installer franchise, which is why we can recommend a rebuild over a replacement when that is the honest answer.

Scope

What we do, and what we don't

Being specific about scope is part of being a specialist. If your job is on the right, we will tell you so on the first call and point you to the right trade.

We repair

  • Convertible roofs that won't open, won't close, stop part-way or are stuck open: motors, mechanisms, micro-switches, sensors, control modules.
  • Convertible roof hydraulics: leaking cylinders (rams) rebuilt in-house, pumps, hoses and system bleeds. Mail-in Australia-wide.
  • Sunroofs and panoramic roofs: leaks and blocked drains, cables and tracks, motors, glass panels, seals, wind noise and grinding.
  • Sunshades and roller blinds that sag, jam or come off their rails.
  • Folding hardtops and vario-roofs (Mercedes SLK and SL, BMW, VW Eos, Peugeot and Renault CC, Holden Cascada and Astra TwinTop).
  • Insurance, warranty and trade jobs, with photo reports and account billing. See the trade pages.

We don't do

  • Fabric, canvas or vinyl soft-top replacement, re-trimming or upholstery. That is a motor trimmer's trade; we can suggest one and we fix the mechanism underneath.
  • Headlining and interior trim repairs that are not part of a roof mechanism job.
  • Window tinting, paint, panel or general mechanical servicing.
  • Quotes from photos or phone calls alone. Roof faults are misdiagnosed that way, so we look at the car first.
  • Guesswork. If the fault is not clear after diagnosis we say so rather than sell a part.

How we work

Diagnose first. Quote in writing. Repair what can be repaired.

  1. 1

Tell us the car and the symptom

Make, model, year and what the roof is doing. If it is stuck open, call before you touch anything; on most systems we can talk you through making the car safe.

  2. 2

    We find the actual fault

The car comes in, we test with proper diagnostic equipment, and where we can we show you what we found. No parts are ordered on a hunch.

  3. 3

You get a written quote, then decide

OEM or premium aftermarket parts, labour, and what is optional versus necessary. Nothing is touched without your say-so.

  4. 4

    Repaired, water-tested, backed

Rebuilt parts are bench-tested before they go back in, leak repairs are water-tested before handover, and every job carries a parts and labour warranty. The term depends on the job and the parts fitted, and it is written on your invoice.

Who we work with

Owners, workshops, dealers and insurers

Roughly six in ten jobs come from owners who found us directly. The rest come from the trade: workshops that sublet roof work rather than decline it, dealerships that keep their customer while we fix the roof, and insurers and warranty providers who need a repairer who can diagnose a roof rather than replace it.

Convertible roof hydraulic cylinders are also rebuilt for owners and workshops outside Sydney. Cylinders arrive by post from every mainland state and New Zealand, are rebuilt and pressure-tested on the same bench as our drive-in work, and go back with fitting notes. How the mail-in rebuild works.

Trade accounts, dealership purchase orders and insurer claim workflows are described on the trade pages. References from workshops and assessors are available on request.
