CLK cabriolet: the rear quarter window that drops
A208 · A209 · rear quarter regulatorsHow it shows up
The rear window sinks into the body and won't come back, comes up crooked or with a crunch, stops partway, or creeps down a couple of centimetres on the motorway. The switch clicks and the motor whirs, so it feels electrical. The front door windows do the same thing later in life, but the rear quarters go first because they carry the most weight on the least hardware.
What's behind it
The regulator carries the glass on plastic sliders and guide blocks that ride in a metal channel. Heat and age crack them, and once one lets go the cable or arm runs out of line and the glass jams or drops. The motor is usually fine. Owners are sometimes told the whole regulator and motor assembly is the only fix; it rarely is.
What we do
Trim off, glass supported, and the failed part in your hand before anything is quoted. Where the frame and cable are sound we rebuild the regulator with new sliders and guides and re-tension it. Where they aren't, a reconditioned or new regulator, with both options on the quote. Then the glass is set for height and tilt so it seals against the roof rubber, and the window is initialised.
