BMW 4 Series window regulator repair, Sydney

The rear quarter window on your F33 or M4 dropped for the roof and never came back. Or it grinds on the way up, sits crooked, and now the dash says the roof can't operate. On the 4 Series convertible the rear quarter windows live inside the rear quarter panels, and those panels have drains that block. Once they do, the regulator and its motor sit in rainwater until the cable rusts through or the motor dies. It is the most common window fault on these cars and it has a known cause. We replace or repair the regulator, clear the drain it drowned in, set the glass to the roof seal and initialise the window so the roof cycles again. Arncliffe, Sydney.

The F33 / M4 window pattern

Why the rear windows go first,
and why the roof cares

Every window on the 4 Series convertible is frameless. The glass drops a few millimetres whenever a door opens, drops fully before the roof moves, and comes back up to seal against a rubber on the roof itself. The front windows have a door around them. The rear quarter windows sit inside a body panel that is also where the roof's drain water goes, and that is the whole story of this page.

Pattern 01

Rear quarter window: dropped, stuck down, or grinding

F33 · F83 · water in the panel

How it shows up

The rear window goes down for the roof and doesn't come back, or stops partway with a grinding or a clunk from inside the panel. It may sit a little crooked first, then drop. Often it starts right after a big storm or a car wash. Press the switch and the motor either whirs with nothing happening or does nothing at all, and the roof throws a warning because a window it needs hasn't moved.

What's behind it

Each rear quarter panel has a drain at the bottom that carries the roof's water out under the car. Sydney leaf litter and road dust silt it up, the panel fills, and the regulator and its motor sit in the water. The cable corrodes and snaps, the rails rust, the motor fails. The window is the symptom; the drain is the fault. Fit a new regulator without clearing it and the new one goes into the same bath.

What we do

Rear trim off, glass supported, and the panel checked for standing water before anything is quoted. The drain is cleared and flushed. If the cable, rails or motor have corroded, a replacement regulator, with the motor only if it has actually failed, both on the quote. Then the glass is set for height and tilt against the roof seal and the window initialised so the short drop and the roof sequence work again.

Pattern 02

The snapped clip: the dry failure

Rear quarter and door windows · brittle plastic

How it shows up

No water, no rust, but the window grinds on the way up, tilts as it rises, or comes up on one side and then falls back into the panel. Sometimes it is a front door window instead: the short drop when you pull the handle misbehaves, or the glass reverses on the way up as if something were in its path.

What's behind it

The regulator carries the glass on plastic clips that hold the cable to the glass carrier. Ten years of heat cycles make them brittle, and once one snaps the cable runs off line, the glass is loose in its channel and the motor keeps driving. The anti-pinch then reverses the window, which reads as a switch or motor fault. It rarely is.

What we do

Scan tool first to separate regulator from motor, switch and module. Trim off and the snapped clip in your hand. Where the frame, cable and motor are dry and sound, the clips are replaced and the cable re-tensioned rather than the whole unit. Where they aren't, a regulator, and you see both options before deciding. Glass set, window initialised, the drain checked while the trim is off.

Pattern 03

The roof that won't fold because of a window

Windows and roof are linked

How it shows up

You press the roof switch. The windows drop partly or not at all, the roof does nothing or stops before the boot lid has lifted, and a roof message comes up on the dash. It looks like the hardtop has failed, and the phone call usually starts with "the roof is stuck".

What's behind it

The roof module lowers all four windows before it releases the roof and checks their position as it goes. A rear quarter regulator that has stalled, or a window that has lost its position memory after a flat battery or a previous repair, stops the sequence before the roof has done anything. The latches, sensors and hydraulics are often fine.

What we do

The window is repaired and initialised first, because nothing about the roof can be judged until the windows run right. Then the roof is cycled. If it still stops once the windows are correct, that becomes its own diagnosis, usually a latch or flap sensor or a cylinder, and it is quoted separately, with your go-ahead first. That side of the car has its own page.

Models we cover

4 Series, M4 and the other BMWs
whose windows run the roof

The panel, the drain and the regulator are the same across the F33 range. If yours isn't listed, text us the model and year and we'll tell you what we'd check first.

4 Series convertible F33 (2014 to 2020)
420i, 420d, 428i, 430i, 435i and 440i. Rear quarter regulators are the regular arrival: drain blocked, panel wet, cable rusted or motor dead. Front door regulators and clips follow with age.
M4 convertible F83 (2014 to 2020)
Same rear quarter panel, same drain, same regulator design as the 430i next to it. The M4 badge changes nothing about the fault or the fix.
4 Series convertible G23 (2021 onwards)
Soft top instead of a hardtop, but the same rule: the windows drop before the roof moves. Regulator wear is rare on cars this new; initialisation after a flat battery or door work is the more likely need.
3 Series convertible E93 (2007 to 2013)
The F33's predecessor, with rear quarter windows and drains of its own. Covered with the E46 on our 3 Series page; the window work is the same job.
Other BMW convertibles
E46 and E88 1 Series soft tops, Z4 E85 and E89. Wherever the roof waits for the windows, the window is our job too. Coupe or Gran Coupe with a door window fault? Text us the model and we'll tell you honestly whether it's one for us.

Not sure which window or which generation? Text us the model and year or call 0418 200 289 and we'll tell you straight away.

How a visit works

Four steps. No surprises.

  1. 1

Tell us the window and the symptom

Call 0418 200 289 or text a short video of the window with the switch pressed. "430i convertible, rear left window down, roof says it can't operate" is enough for us to say whether it's one for us and what we'd check first, usually the same business day. The number comes after we have the car in the workshop, not before; a price guessed over the phone is a guess with your money.

  2. 2

Trim off, panel dried, fault in your hand

Scan tool first to separate regulator from motor, switch and module. Then the rear trim comes off, the panel is checked for water and the drain cleared, and the rusted cable, snapped clip or dead motor is shown to you before anything is quoted.

  3. 3

Repair or replace, then set the glass

Clips replaced and the cable re-tensioned where the regulator is sound, or a replacement regulator where it isn't, with the motor only if it has failed. Both on the quote. The glass is set for height and tilt against the roof seal and the window initialised. OEM or premium aftermarket parts, your go-ahead first.

  4. 4

We cycle the roof and rain on it

All four windows through their full travel, the roof cycled with the car, then the quarter-panel drains flow-tested and the seals water-tested, so the new regulator isn't going back into the same bath. Covered by our parts & labour warranty.

The rear quarter window on my 4 Series convertible went down and won't come back up. What has happened?

On the F33 and the F83 M4 the rear quarter windows sit inside the rear quarter panels, and each panel has a drain that blocks with leaf litter and road dust. Once it blocks, rain fills the panel and the regulator and its motor sit in water until the cable rusts through or the motor fails. The other cause is the plastic clips that hold the regulator cable to the glass carrier; they go brittle with age and heat and snap, which gives a grinding noise and a window that comes up crooked or drops. We take the rear trim off, dry the panel, show you which it is, and quote from there. Clearing the drain is part of the job.

Why won't my roof fold when it's the window that's broken?

Because on the 4 Series convertible the roof module drops all four windows before it releases the roof and checks their position as it goes. A rear quarter window that won't move stops the sequence before the roof has done anything, and you get a roof warning on the dash that looks like a roof fault. The window is repaired and initialised first; the roof is cycled after that. If the roof still stops once the windows are right, that is its own diagnosis, usually a latch or flap sensor or the hydraulics, and it's covered on our 4 Series roof repair page.

Can the regulator be repaired, or is it the whole assembly and the motor?

It depends on what the water did. Snapped clips on a regulator that is otherwise dry and sound can be repaired without replacing the unit. A corroded cable, a rusted frame or a motor that has been under water means a replacement regulator, and the motor only if it has actually failed; both options go on the quote. Regulators for these cars are ordered in for the job once you've approved the quote, so the car isn't sitting with the trim off waiting on a part.

How do I stop it happening again?

Keep the rear quarter-panel drains clear. We clear them as part of every regulator job and show you where they are, because a new regulator fitted into a panel that still holds water is a repeat visit waiting to happen. Between visits, if a rear window slows down or grinds after heavy rain or a car wash, stop pressing the switch and call us; forcing it snaps the clips and turns a drain clean into a regulator.

What owners say

★★★★★

"Michael is an amazing craftsman. For what would have taken us to get an entire large part from BMW and coordinate roof repair with expensive repair service, Michael created a small part for our car and fixed it then and there. He charges reasonably. I highly recommend his service and will happily be a repeat customer."
