BMW 3 Series & 1 Series convertible roof repair, Sydney

The 2000 to 2006 3 Series convertible's hydraulic pump gives up often enough that we stock it, so an E46 is not left waiting on a part. Three roofs come through Arncliffe under this badge. The E46 soft top stops halfway when the pump, a ram or a small switch has had enough. The 2007 to 2013 folding hardtop is three steel panels and a boot full of sensors. The 1 Series convertible is a smaller hydraulic soft top with the same habits. All three leak the same way when the drains block, and none needs a whole roof for what is usually one failed part. Fixed, the roof works on the switch, the cabin stays dry, and you have paid for the part that failed. Call or text us the model, year and symptom; you'll usually hear back the same business day.

Known faults: BMW 3 Series & 1 Series convertibles

What goes wrong on these roofs,
and what we do about it

Three roofs share this page: the E46 soft top, the E93 folding hardtop and the smaller 1 Series soft top. All three are hydraulic, all three fail in different places, and the rule is the same for each. The symptom rarely points at the part, and the part is rarely the whole roof.

Fault 01

2000 to 2006 soft top stops partway, or the pump hums and nothing moves

E46 · hydraulic pump · rams · relay

How it shows up

You hold the switch, the roof lifts, stops at the same point every time, and the pump hums under the boot floor. Or nothing happens at all. Sometimes a faint oily patch in the boot lining, and a roof that has been getting slower for months without anyone quite noticing.

Why it gets misread

A new pump is the first quote most owners get, and the pump does fail on these cars, which is why we stock it. But a ram weeping past its seals, low fluid from that leak, a tired relay or a latch switch that has stopped reporting will all produce the same stop. Fitting a pump for any of those leaves the fault exactly where it was.

How we fix it

With the car in the workshop we watch which stage stops, read the roof module, and test the pump, the rams and the switches one at a time. Leaking rams are rebuilt in-house, the pump replaced only if it has actually failed, the failed relay or switch replaced on its own. The quote lays a rebuilt ram against a new one, and a genuine pump against a sound second-hand one, with photographs of what came out. Then the roof is cycled through every position and water-tested. If yours is stuck partway right now, don't keep pressing the switch; call first. Covered by our parts & labour warranty, and if the roof ever misbehaves after, you call us first.

Fault 02

2007 to 2013 hardtop stops mid-cycle with a warning

E93 · folding hardtop · sensors · hydraulics

How it shows up

The roof starts, lifts a panel, then stops with a message on the dash and won't go either way. The boot won't release for the roof, or the roof won't fold because the boot separator isn't in place. Sometimes it works on the third try, which is the car telling you a sensor is on its way out.

Why it gets misread

Roof control modules and complete hydraulic units get quoted for what is usually one position sensor that has moved a millimetre, one ram weeping, or a separator flap that isn't being seen. Intermittent faults are where owners lose the most money, because guessing is expensive on a roof with this many sensors.

How we fix it

We read the roof's own fault memory, then confirm it by hand on the car: which sensor, which ram, which point in the cycle. The failed part is replaced individually, the roof realigned and cycled through every position to prove the cure. Intermittent faults get time in the workshop, not a guess.

Fault 03

1 Series soft top slow, lopsided or won't start

E88 · hydraulic pump · rams · windows

How it shows up

The roof goes slow, one side moves before the other, or it stops with a warning before it has really begun. The windows drop, the roof twitches, and that is all. The 1 Series convertible uses a smaller version of the E46's hydraulic roof, so the same pump, rams and relay are the suspects, and it waits for the windows the same way.

Why it gets misread

A whole roof drive gets quoted for a ram weeping past its seals or a tired relay, or a roof job gets quoted for a window regulator that isn't dropping the glass out of the way. The roof waits for the windows on these cars and checks their position before it will move.

How we fix it

Pump and rams tested individually, leaking rams rebuilt in-house, the relay replaced on its own, regulators rebuilt or replaced and the windows initialised so the roof knows where they are. Then the roof is cycled and water-tested.

Fault 04

Water where it shouldn't be

Drains · seals · rear glass edge

How it shows up

On the E46 it is a wet boot floor and damp carpet behind the front seats; on the E93 hardtop it is water in the roof stowage well and a damp rear parcel shelf. Both show up after the first big storm of the season, with fog on the inside of the glass on cold mornings, and both roofs look fine from outside.

Why it gets misread

On a soft top the fabric gets blamed first. Far more often the drains at the rear of the roof well have blocked with leaf litter and the water is running into the cabin, or a seal along the side rail has hardened and lifted at one corner. On the hardtop it is the seals between the panels and the drains under them.

How we fix it

The car gets water put over it in stages until we can both point at where it comes in, which happens before any quote. Drains cleared and flushed, seals replaced or reseated, then tested again before handover. The fabric side belongs to a trimmer; the drains and seals that put the water there belong to us. Covered by our parts & labour warranty. If the fabric itself has gone, we'll tell you straight and suggest a good motor trimmer.

Models we cover

Every 3 Series and 1 Series
convertible

Three generations, three different roofs. Text us the year if you're not sure which you have; the fixes below are matched to each.

3 Series Convertible, 2000 to 2006 (E46)
The hydraulic soft top. Pumps, weeping rams and latch switches are the three arrivals, and we stock the pump so the car isn't waiting on one. Rams are rebuilt in-house. The M3 convertible uses the same roof.
3 Series Convertible, 2007 to 2013 (E93)
The three-piece folding steel hardtop. Position sensors, weeping rams and the boot separator are the pattern; the roof control module is rarely the problem despite being the usual quote.
1 Series Convertible, 2008 to 2013 (E88)
A smaller hydraulic soft top with the E46's habits: pump, rams and relay, and windows the roof waits for. Rams are rebuilt in-house.
3 Series Convertible, 1993 to 1999 (E36)
Older, simpler, and still around. Motors, cables and latches; parts are thinner on the ground but most faults are repairable.
4 Series and M4 convertibles (2014 onwards)
The 3 Series convertible became the 4 Series in 2014. It has its own page.
Z4
Both the soft-top and the hardtop Z4 have their own page.

How a visit works

Four steps. No surprises.

  1. 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call 0418 200 289, or text a short video of the roof trying to move to the same number. '2003 330Ci, roof lifts a third of the way and the pump hums' is enough for us to say whether it's one for us and what we'd check first, usually the same business day. The number comes after we have the car in the workshop, not before; a price guessed over the phone is a guess with your money. Then we book a time to look at it.

  2. 2

    We diagnose, you see it

The roof comes into the workshop. We read the roof module, watch which stage stops, and test the pump or motor, the rams or cables, the sensors and the windows one at a time. You see the failed part, photographed for you, before anything is quoted.

  3. 3

    We fix it properly

Rams rebuilt in-house, pumps and motors replaced only when they've actually failed, sensors, switches, cables and regulators replaced individually: OEM or premium aftermarket parts, fitted by factory-trained technicians, with your go-ahead on the quote first. Covered by our parts & labour warranty.

  4. 4

We rain on it before Sydney does

No roof leaves on a promise. Cycled through every position, drains flow-tested, seals soaked, cabin checked dry. The water test is why our repairs stay repaired.

What owners say

Repair first, replace last.
Owners notice the difference

★★★★★

“Michael is an amazing craftsman. For what would have taken us to get an entire large part from BMW and coordinate roof repair with expensive repair service, Michael created a small part for our car and fixed it then and there. He charges reasonably. I highly recommend his service and will happily be a repeat customer.”

My E46 roof stops halfway and the pump hums. Do I need a new pump?

Maybe. The E46 pump does fail, and we stock it for that reason, but a pump that hums is often working while a ram leaks past its seals, fluid has run low from that leak, or a relay or latch switch has gone. We test each one on the car before naming the part. If it is a ram, we rebuild it here, so you pay for the ram that failed rather than a pump for a fault the pump never had. If you've already been quoted elsewhere, bring the quote: we test the car, show you what we find, and you compare the two side by side. If they were right, we'll say so. Worst case, you find out exactly what is wrong and decide from there. Best case, it is one part.

My E93 hardtop stops with a warning and won't go either way. Is it the module?

Rarely. The E93 roof has a lot of position sensors and it stops the moment one of them disagrees with the others, which is usually a sensor that has moved, a ram that is weeping, or the boot separator not being seen. We read the roof's fault memory with the scan tool and confirm it by hand. The failed part is replaced on its own. Don't keep pressing the switch in the meantime; here's what to do first.

I'm not in Sydney. Can you still rebuild the rams?

Yes. Leaking rams and pumps can be sent to us from anywhere in Australia. You remove them, we rebuild and test them, and they go back to you ready to fit, with the test result and photos. The mail-in page explains how it works and what to send. For the roof itself, the E46 and E93 need to be here in Arncliffe. Text a photo of the leaking ram first and we'll tell you whether it is one we rebuild and what to send.

Does it have to go back to BMW?

No. Roofs are all we do, and it is the same pump, rams, sensors and switches whoever opens the boot. The parts catalogue sells the roof in large assemblies, so a complete hydraulic unit or a roof module is often what gets quoted; our job is to watch which stage stops, test the pump, the rams and the switches one at a time, and replace the one that failed. If you already have a quote from the dealer or another workshop, bring it: we test the car, show you what we find, and you compare the two side by side. If they were right, we'll say so. OEM or premium aftermarket parts, factory-trained hands, a water test before the keys come back, and our parts & labour warranty behind all of it.

Do you replace the fabric on an E46 or 1 Series soft top?

No. On the E46 and the 1 Series the fabric, the rear window and re-covering are a motor trimmer's trade and we don't do trimming; on the E93 there is no fabric to argue about, the panels are steel. Everything that makes any of the three roofs move and seal is ours: pump, rams, sensors and switches, windows, drains and seals. If the fabric is the problem we'll say so and suggest a good trimmer.

My E46 is over twenty years old. Is the roof worth fixing?

In our experience, yes. The E46 roof was built well, we stock the pump, leaking rams are rebuilt here, and most faults come down to one part rather than the whole system. How long you plan to keep the car shapes what we recommend, so we'll ask. In twenty-plus years and more than a thousand roofs we have found very few that were not worth the money; if yours is one, we'll say so before you spend it, not after.
