Mercedes E-Class & C-Class cabriolet roof repair, Sydney

An E-Class or C-Class cabriolet roof that stops partway with a warning, or stops just short of the windscreen, is usually one sensor, one weeping ram, one hardened seal or a latch that needs adjusting. Rarely the control module or the complete hydraulic unit it tends to be quoted for. The E-Class took over the CLK's hydraulic soft top in 2010 and added more sensors, a windbreak and better sealing. The C-Class cabriolet from 2016 shares the family. More sensors means the roof stops more readily when one thing is out of place, and finding it is the job. Every roof is diagnosed properly in the workshop in Arncliffe, and you see the failed part before anything is quoted. Fixed, the roof works on the switch, latches home and stays dry. Call or text us the model, year and symptom; you'll usually hear back the same business day.

Known faults: Mercedes E-Class & C-Class cabriolets

What goes wrong on these roofs,
and what we do about it

A modern Mercedes soft top is a hydraulic pump, a set of rams, a latch, a windbreak, a dozen sensors and four windows that all have to agree before the roof will move. When it stops, one of them has disagreed. That is why we diagnose before we quote: on a roof with this many sensors, a guess is paid for in parts the car never needed.

Fault 01

Roof stops partway with a warning on the dash

Position sensors · hydraulics

How it shows up

The roof starts, lifts or folds to the same point, then stops with a message and won't go either way. Sometimes it completes on the third try, which is the car telling you a sensor is on its way out. Sometimes it goes slow and lopsided first, which points at the hydraulics instead.

Why it gets misread

A roof control module or a complete hydraulic unit gets quoted for what is usually one position sensor that has moved, one ram weeping past its seals, or fluid that has slowly run low. Intermittent faults are where owners lose the most money on these roofs, because guessing is expensive.

How we fix it

We read the roof's own fault memory, then confirm it by hand on the car: which sensor, which ram, which point in the cycle. Leaking rams are rebuilt in-house, sensors replaced individually, the pump replaced only if it has actually failed. Rebuilt against new for the ram, genuine against good second-hand for the pump, both priced on the same page with photos of the failure. Then the roof is cycled through every position to prove the cure. If yours is stuck open right now, don't keep pressing the switch; call first. Covered by our parts & labour warranty, and if the roof ever misbehaves after, you call us first.

Fault 02

Won't latch, won't close the last bit, or pops a warning when you drive

Latch · header seal · sensors

How it shows up

The roof comes forward and stops just short of the windscreen, or latches and then reports itself open, or wind noise appears along the top of the windscreen at speed. Sometimes the boot lid won't release for the roof to fold, or the roof refuses because the boot separator isn't in place.

Why it gets misread

The latch motor and the whole front assembly get quoted for a latch that needs adjusting, a sensor that has drifted, or a front seal that has hardened and is holding the roof off its stop. The boot separator being missed by its sensor gets diagnosed as a roof fault when it is a boot fault.

How we fix it

Latch tested and adjusted, sensors checked and replaced individually, the front seal replaced where it has hardened, the boot separator and its sensor checked. Then the roof is latched and released repeatedly, driven, and water-tested before it goes home.

Fault 03

Four windows drop a little, or the windbreak jams, and the roof waits

Window regulators · windbreak

How it shows up

The switch clicks, all four windows drop a little, and then nothing. Or one window won't go down at all and the roof won't start. On the E-Class the windbreak that rises from the windscreen frame can do the same thing if it jams.

Why it gets misread

On the E-Class two things have to get out of the way before the roof moves: the four windows and the windbreak that rises from the windscreen frame. A regulator that has jammed, or a windbreak that has, stops the roof before it has begun, and the owner arrives with a roof quote for what is a window or windbreak job.

How we fix it

Regulator rebuilt or replaced, the glass aligned to the roof seal, the window initialised so the roof knows where it is, the windbreak checked. Then the roof is cycled. Most of the time the roof was fine all along.

Fault 04

Water where it shouldn't be

Drains · seals

How it shows up

The E-Class seals better than the CLK it replaced, so when water gets in it is nearly always the drains at the rear of the roof well: damp carpet behind the front seats, a wet boot floor, a musty smell, fog on the inside of the glass on a cold morning, all after the first big storm of the season.

Why it gets misread

The fabric gets blamed first, on a roof that seals better than most. Far more often the drains at the rear of the roof well have blocked with leaf litter and the overflow has run into the cabin, or a seal along the side rail has hardened and lifted at one corner.

How we fix it

Staged water testing until the way in is obvious to both of us, which comes before the quote rather than after it. Drains cleared and flushed, seals replaced or reseated where they have failed, then tested again before handover. Trimming is a different trade, but on this roof the drains and the seals are where the water almost always starts, and those are ours. Covered by our parts & labour warranty. If the fabric itself has gone, we'll tell you straight and suggest a good motor trimmer.

Models we cover

Every E-Class and C-Class
cabriolet

One family of roof across four models and fourteen years. Text us the model and year if you're not sure which you have; the fixes above apply to all of them.

E-Class Cabriolet, 2010 to 2017 (A207)
The first E-Class cabriolet and the direct CLK successor. Pumps, weeping rams, position sensors and the latch are the pattern. The pump is a part we source and fit regularly; rams are rebuilt in-house.
E-Class Cabriolet, 2017 to 2023 (A238)
Bigger, quieter, more sensors. Mostly sensors and the latch so far, with the same hydraulics underneath as they age.
C-Class Cabriolet, 2016 to 2023 (A205)
The same family of roof in a smaller car. Sensors, windows and the windbreak are the usual arrivals.
CLE Cabriolet, 2024 onwards
The replacement for both. Too new for patterns yet; the hardware is familiar.
E 200, E 250, E 300, E 350, E 400, E 450, E 53 AMG and the C-Class equivalents
Engine makes no difference to the roof. The AMG cabriolets use the same roof hardware and get the same treatment.
CLK cabriolet
The 2000 to 2010 predecessor has its own page.

How a visit works

Four steps. No surprises.

  1. 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call 0418 200 289, or text a short video of the roof trying to move to the same number. '2013 E250 cabriolet, roof folds halfway then stops with a warning' is enough for us to say whether it's one for us and what we'd check first, usually the same business day. The number comes after we have the car in the workshop, not before; a price guessed over the phone is a guess with your money. Then we book a time to look at it.

  2. 2

    We diagnose, you see it

The roof comes into the workshop. We read the roof module, watch which stage stops, and test the pump, the rams, the sensors, the latch and the windows one at a time. You see the failed part, photographed for you, before anything is quoted.

  3. 3

    We fix it properly

Rams rebuilt in-house, pumps replaced only when they've actually failed, sensors, switches, seals and regulators replaced individually: OEM or premium aftermarket parts, fitted by factory-trained technicians, with your go-ahead on the quote first. Covered by our parts & labour warranty.

  4. 4

We rain on it before Sydney does

No roof leaves on a promise. Cycled through every position, latched and released, drains flow-tested, seals soaked, cabin checked dry. The water test is why our repairs stay repaired.

My E-Class roof stops halfway with a warning. Is it the control module?

Rarely. These roofs have a lot of position sensors and they stop the moment one disagrees with the others, which is usually a sensor that has moved, a ram that is weeping, or fluid that has run low. We read the roof's fault memory with the scan tool and confirm it by hand on the car. The failed part is replaced on its own. Worst case, you find out exactly what is wrong and decide from there. Best case, it is one part. If you've already been quoted elsewhere, bring the quote: we test the car, show you what we find, and you compare the two side by side. If they were right, we'll say so. Don't keep pressing the switch in the meantime; call first.

Does it have to go back to Mercedes-Benz?

No. Roofs are all we do. The parts catalogue sells the roof in large assemblies, so the control module or the complete hydraulic unit is often what gets quoted; our job is to read the roof's fault memory, confirm the sensor, ram, seal or latch by hand in the workshop, and replace that part. OEM or premium aftermarket parts, factory-trained technicians, a water test before it leaves, and our parts & labour warranty. The E-Class kept the CLK's hydraulic soft top, so the pump, the rams and the windows the roof waits for behave the same way; more sensors means more diagnosis, not more parts.

The roof latches but the car says it's open, and there's wind noise at speed. What is that?

Usually the latch not pulling the roof fully home, or the seal along the top of the windscreen has hardened and is holding the roof a few millimetres off its stop, so the sensor never sees it as closed. We adjust or replace the latch, replace the seal where it has gone hard, and check the sensor. Then the roof is latched and released repeatedly and driven before it goes home.

Do you replace the fabric on an E-Class or C-Class soft top?

No. Fabric, the rear window and re-covering are a motor trimmer's trade and we don't do trimming, on the E-Class as on every soft top we see. The pump, the rams, the sensors, the latch, the windows, the windbreak, the drains and the seals are ours, and on this roof it is the sensors and the latch that stop it far more often than anything in the fabric. If the fabric is the problem we'll say so and suggest a good trimmer.
