Hyundai, Kia & Holden
sunroof repair, Sydney

Hyundai and Kia put a panoramic roof in almost everything after 2012, and the Holden Captiva, Equinox, Commodore and Astra carried sunroofs by the thousand. Ten years on, these are the roofs whose blinds sag, whose glass cracks on a hot afternoon, whose plastic rail shoes crumble so the panel stops halfway, and whose drains block and put water on the headlining. The dealer quotes a complete roof assembly. We repair the part that failed. The i30, i40 and Sonata, the Sportage and Sorento, the Captiva and the Commodore all come through the workshop; here is what they do and what we do about it.

The Hyundai, Kia and Holden pattern

Blinds, glass and rails:
the three jobs these roofs bring

Korean and Holden roofs share suppliers and share failures. The parts are available, the repairs are routine for a workshop that does roofs all day, and almost none of them needs the complete assembly the dealer quotes.

Pattern 01

The roller blind that sags, jams or will not close

i30 · i40 · Sonata · Santa Fe · Sportage · Sorento · Carnival · Equinox

How it shows up

The sunshade under the panoramic glass droops in the middle, stops a hand-span in, or has come off its rail on one side. On a hot day the cabin cooks because the blind will not cover the glass. Owners live with it until a passenger pulls it and the fabric tears.

Why it gets misread

The blind is quoted as a new panoramic roof assembly, because on these cars the dealer parts system sells it that way. In fact the blind runs on two cables from a drum, the fabric is glued to an end bar, and either the glue or a cable is what has failed. The blind itself is usually sound.

What we do

We re-bond the end bar, re-cable the drum or fit a new blind assembly where the fabric has gone, then set its travel so it stops square at both ends. Genuine or aftermarket blinds are available for most of these models. More on the sunshade page.

Pattern 02

Glass that cracked with no stone, and panels that stop halfway

i30 · i40 · Veloster · Cerato · Captiva · Commodore · Astra · Cruze

How it shows up

A crack across the panoramic or sliding glass that appeared overnight or on the motorway with nothing in sight. Or a panel that opens, stops partway, and closes crooked, with a plastic crunch on the way. On the Veloster and the i30 the sliding panel can drop at one corner because a rail shoe has broken.

Why it gets misread

Stress cracks in tempered roof glass are common on these roofs and are not a resin job; the panel has to be replaced. A crooked or stopping panel is quoted as a motor or a whole roof, when it is nearly always the plastic guide shoes and lifters in the rails, which go brittle with age and heat. The glass page covers the replacement.

What we do

Glass is replaced with the fragments cleared from the rails and drains, the new panel set to the seal and the roof re-initialised. Rails are stripped, broken shoes and lifters replaced, the rails cleaned and lubricated, and the panel taught its positions again. The Veloster rail job is a known one here and has its own procedure.

Pattern 03

Water on the headlining, a wet footwell, a motor that hums

Santa Fe · Tucson · Staria · Captiva · Equinox · Commodore VE and VF

How it shows up

Water staining at the front of the headlining, a damp A-pillar, wet carpet on the passenger side after rain, and on the Captiva and Commodore a dome light or a module that has started to misbehave. Or the switch is pressed and the motor hums with no movement.

Why it gets misread

The leak gets blamed on the glass seal and the motor gets replaced as a unit. The seal is not where the water gets in; the drains under the tray have blocked and the tray overflows. A humming motor is usually a stripped gear or a mechanism seized on dry rails, both of which a new motor alone does not fix.

What we do

Drains flow-tested and cleared to the sills, hoses refitted, the tray cleaned, the roof water-tested with the trim open. Motors replaced only after the mechanism is freed and lubricated, then reset so the panel learns its end stops. The leak page has the detail.

The Hyundai, Kia and Holden roofs
we see most

From the enquiries and the jobs. If yours is not listed, it is a close relative of one that is.

Hyundai i30 (2012 on), i40, i45 and Sonata
i30: roller blind failing, panoramic glass cracking, rail shoes on the sliding panel. i40 and i45: panoramic glass and blind. Sonata LF: panoramic blind and drains. These three are the most common Hyundai enquiries we get.
Hyundai Santa Fe, Tucson, Staria and Kona
Large panoramic roofs: blind cables, fixed rear glass, drains into the C-pillar, rattles. The Staria panoramic roof is new enough that most faults are warranty; we handle the ones that are not.
Hyundai Veloster
Sliding panoramic panel dropping at a corner or stopping: the rail and guide assembly. A known job in this workshop with its own procedure and parts source.
Kia Sportage, Sorento, Carnival, Cerato, Rondo, Stinger
Sportage and Sorento: panoramic blind and glass, drains. Carnival: large panoramic roof, blind and seal. Cerato and Rondo: sliding sunroof motor and rail faults. Kia shares its roofs with Hyundai, so the repairs are the same.
Holden Captiva and Equinox
Captiva: drains blocking and water into the headlining and electrics, blind, sliding panel seal. Equinox: panoramic blind and glass. The most frequent Holden sunroof enquiry here is the Captiva.
Holden Commodore (VE, VF and earlier), Astra, Cruze
Commodore: sliding sunroof motor, drains and seal on a roof now ten to twenty years old, including the VL, VX and VB-era classics that still turn up. Astra and Cruze: the GM sliding sunroof, motor and guide faults. The Cascada and Astra convertibles have their own page.

How a visit works

Four steps. No surprises.

  1. 1

Tell us the car and the symptom

Call 0418 200 289 or use the form, with the make, model, year and VIN; on these roofs the VIN lets us check the blind or glass part and its availability the same day. A photo of the blind or the crack helps.

  2. 2

    We diagnose, you see it

Blind, rails and drains checked with the glass out where needed; the motor read on the scan tool where the car has one. You see the broken shoe or the blocked tube before anything is quoted.

  3. 3

We fix the part, not the roof

Blind re-bonded, re-cabled or replaced; glass replaced; rail shoes, lifters, cables and motors replaced only where they have failed; drains cleared. Genuine or quality aftermarket parts, your go-ahead first.

  4. 4

We rain on it before Sydney does

The roof is cycled repeatedly, the seals soaked under a controlled water test, and the headlining and footwells checked dry before handover.

Hyundai, Kia and Holden
sunroof questions

Hyundai quoted a complete panoramic roof assembly for a sagging blind. Is that the only way?

No. The blind is a separate part on every Hyundai and Kia panoramic roof, and the usual failure is the glue at the end bar or a cable off its drum, not the blind itself. We repair or replace the blind alone. The same applies to Kia, which shares the roof.

My i30 or Sportage glass cracked with nothing hitting it. Will insurance cover it?

Often, under the glass cover on a comprehensive policy. It is a stress crack from the bonded edge and it will spread, so it needs a new panel, not a fill. We photograph it, quote for the claim and replace the glass with the fragments cleared and the roof water-tested.

The Captiva has water on the headlining. Is it the seal?

Almost never. The drains under the sunroof tray block and the tray overflows; the seal was never meant to be watertight. We clear and flow-test all four drains and water-test the roof before handover. If water has already reached a module under the carpet, we tell you.

Do you do the Veloster rail?

Yes. The sliding panoramic panel on the Veloster drops or stops when the rail guides fail, and the dealer answer is the whole roof. We replace the rail assembly; it is a known job here with its own procedure.

Is my car too old or too cheap to be worth it?

Usually not. Most of these repairs are a blind, a set of rail shoes, a drain clean or a motor, and the car is worth far more with a dry cabin and a working roof. We tell you on the day if the repair is not worth the car.

What owners say

From the 4.9★ Google reviews

★★★★★

"Michael is the best. My Benz had a seized panoramic sunroof and the motor for the roof died. He had it fixed and working perfectly in three hours. And was by far the most reasonably priced."

Mercedes-Benz · Seized panoramic sunroof & motor
★★★★★

"It was an absolute pleasure dealing with Michael. With 29 years of experience, he really knows his craft. He was honest, friendly, and did a perfect job fixing the convertible top on my Mercedes. Definitely worth the 1-hour drive to get there. Highly recommended!"

Mercedes-Benz · Convertible top
★★★★★

"Michael is an amazing craftsman. For what would have taken us to get an entire large part from BMW and coordinate roof repair with expensive repair service, Michael created a small part for our car and fixed it then and there. He charges reasonably. I highly recommend his service and will happily be a repeat customer."
